My Journey to Leadership

When I was 23, I was eager for an official promotion to management. For a year, I had unofficially managed a team of five, handling work assignments, hiring and firing decisions, and performance appraisals. Despite my responsibilities, I lacked the title and pay that went along with my duties.

One day, my senior boss offered me a data manager position with the title but no direct reports. I declined, explaining my dream of leading people. He candidly told me that as a smart, young woman, I might face challenges being taken seriously. His words, though well-intentioned, fueled my determination to become an exceptional manager.

Eventually, I was granted the title and the responsibility of managing a team that quickly grew to 35 large, but without formal training. My team looked to me for guidance, conflict resolution, and leadership, despite some doubting my capabilities due to my inexperience. I quickly realized I needed to build my toolkit of skills and knowledge.

Interestingly, I learned a lot from my team about effective leadership. They taught me what to do and what to avoid.

Over the past couple of decades, I have managed many teams from 5-1400 strong, across many countries.
